On the island of Mindanao, in the southern Philippines, is a small village called Tinumigues. The population of about five thousand includes both Christians and Muslims. Their livelihood depends on farming. Although the land is worked by all family members including women and children, the majority live in poverty. Once fertile farmland, the people of Tinumigues could grow enough produce to provide for their families and earn a meager income. That all changed in 2008 when a substandard dam broke and flooded the village. The main roads connecting Tinumigues with its neighboring villages were now gone. Almost 90%of the farmlands including the center of the village were wiped out. All infrastructure including the elementary school was devastated and services quickly became non-existent.

Tinumigues has still not recovered. Water borne illnesses are prevalent and many especially children and the elderly become sick or die. These people have nowhere else to go. They were born and raised in Tinumigues and have no resources to relocate from this devastation. Families can barely sustain themselves by eating and selling the fish in the floodwaters. Some houses have been rebuilt on bamboo above the waterline but sanitation is poor and dysentery is common. A small infirmary with a midwife is the only source of medical care and more serious illnesses usually end tragically. The only source of potable water is a few flowings, deep wells that simply seep water without the aid of mechanical pumps. The people in Tinumigues are in desperate need. The lack of sanitation and exposed human waste are issues that need immediate attention and lead directly to malnutrition and contaminated water.

Together we can save Tinumigues.
